Locally, small businesses are echoing the call for continued investment in our infrastructure. Transportation is the economic engine of our community – creating jobs, getting people to work, and a way to manage growth.

What will you get when you surround 35 or so at-risk teenage girls with strong role models, compassionate supporters and fearless leaders for four weeks? If nonprofit organizers are right, you’ll get the next generation of strong role models, compassionate supporters and fearless leaders. That’s the mission of the second annual “The Greatest Investment – Girls’ Empowerment Summer Camp Experience” July 18 through August 12, 2011 in Orlando.

This is our second year working with the girls. Together with our friends at L2 Studios and E-Sciences, we are proud to introduce future female leaders to the fields of architecture, engineering and environmental science. We shared our offices, resources, and knowledge and in the end they reminded ourselves why we love what we do. Special thanks to Kayla, Marie and Shania for spending part of your day with us. We hope you had fun.

As a riverfront city and local utility provider, our client understands there is no greater commitment than caring for our environment. The city commissioned Myra Planning and Design to design a Green Street and Complete Street.

Green Street design elements include:
- Integrated Drainage
- Native Landscape
- Reuse of the Existing Asphalt
- Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting

Complete Street design elements include:
- Continuous Sidewalks
- Consolidated Driveways
- Pedestrian Scaled / Level Lighting
- Signed Bicycle Route

Our friends in Putnam County, US Congressman John Mica and the folks at APTA invited us to the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Brevi Bus. This rural lowfloor bus is just what you need to get through Florida's sugar sand. We're wishing them the best of luck in Altoona for testing.

By the way, if you are in Palatka, check out Corky Bell's Seafood at Gator Landing. You won't be disappointed with the food or the view. We saw a gator or two!

It was time to grab those paint brushes and work on a Habitat for Humanity home this weekend. We decided to take some time out to help other women realize the dream of homeownership. All of the prospective clients were women and I’d like to think that they were laughing *with* us. I have to say that we did a great job, especially with No Streaks! Sola performing quality control on our handiwork.

]]><![CDATA[Canstruction]]>Sun, 25 Apr 2010 15:30:17 -0800http://www.myraplanning.com/2/post/2010/04/canstruction.htmlWe were excited to be a part of an event that donates canned goods to Second Harvest Food Bank, a local food bank that collects and distributes food to over 600 non-profit partner agencies. The efficient engineer (that's me) wanted to combine form and function with a building made out of the canned goods, aka canstruction. With the help of Dana the Architect and Yasmin the Design Builder, we made it happen. So what can you make out of 60 cans of olives, 12 cans of mushrooms, 10 boxes of spaghetti, 8 cans of tomato paste, 6 cans of tomato bisque and 4 bottles of Big House Red? Check out the process and final results below.

You would think that the first of the year would be slow, but this year started off with a bang and has not slowed down. There’s marketing, billable work and daily administrative tasks to do…but, finding the time to go to Legislative Days was an easy decision. I dug out the northern coat and walked the halls of the capitol to lobby local legislators on bills that design professionals statewide should support. SB 1964 and HB 701 allow us to limit our liability through professional contracts. Thanks to all that welcomed us and special kudos to Rep. Horner and Rep. Mayfield for co-sponsoring the bill.

Cleveland rocks, Cleveland rocks. The theme song from the Drew Carey Show used to sing in my head every time Ken would talk about his hometown. Now I know why. You can see the influences of Daniel Burnham’s plan on this city on a lake. The arcade is a jewel in the middle of downtown and the outdoor restaurants that line East 4th Street remind me of quaint cafes tucked away in an European alley.

Along East 4th Street, the tables were three deep and the entire area was buzzing of energy. Is there an underutilized side street in your downtown? Maybe its time to reclaim those streets so that you can enjoy a cup of coffee or glass of wine outside, sans car fumes.

Planning, design, construction and finally moving day…a special thanks to all at the City of Cocoa for their vision, hard work and belief in the community. Today, I am proud to announce that Cocoa’s new LEED certified City Hall is open for business. Located in Historic Cocoa Village, this new civic building will consolidate city departments and services that were scattered throughout the city.

From freight to public open space. You have to give it to NYC. They find opportunities in places no one would think to look. The High Line is a former freight line on the west side of Manhattan in the Meatpacking District. Ten years after the Friends of the High Line was formed to advocate for the High Line's preservation and reuse as public open space, it is now open and I'm going to check it out.

This morning on NPR, they compared it to an open air museum. I picture it as a trail high up in the air and I love trails. I run on trails. I ride my bike on trails. I plan lots and lots of trails and sometimes I even design a trail or two. I know it sounds geeky but I really want to see the railings.
